August 2022 Rising Stars: The Mac-Hi Pioneer Boys Soccer Team

Last Updated 11/23/2022Posted in Volunteerism

During the Weekend at the Blues Music Festival, the MFCDA hosted a mini-golf course segment donated to us by the Walla Walla Exchange Club. This golf course offers a full 9-hole spread, complete with an array of colorful golf balls and three sizes of clubs to suit varying heights. It was built to last with incredibly sturdy materials, and weighs in total over 2,000 lbs.

Knowing that the task of putting the golf course together for the first time would be extraordinarily difficult and needing manpower, we reached out to City Councilor and McLoughlin High School Soccer Coach Jose Garcia for help.

On both Friday and Sunday, the boys ranging in age from 13-17 spent their strength and energy, in a grueling heatwave and direct sunlight, for hours on end. Jose Garcia himself assisted in moving every single segment of the golf course with a smile on his face! Even after hours of work, not a single complaint was uttered by those boys, and they refused payment for their efforts, citing their dedication to public service. A huge thank you goes out from everyone at the MFCDA to Jose Garcia and his soccer team! We simply could not have pulled this off without them.

Every year, these kids engage in numerous service projects; they worked for hours helping the Friends of the Library Book Sale moving and setting up at the Community Building. They spent their Saturday, 8/20/22, putting a handprint border around the chalkboards that RDI's first Leadership Cohort installed as the class project, and moving the books back after the Book Sale was over.

Look for these rock stars in the next generation of rising community leadership! They're everywhere, at everything, know everyone, and are establishing themselves as valued community members even in their youth. Jose's mentorship, guidance, and role modeling to his team is evident in the way those boys admirably conduct themselves professionally and cheerfully, showcasing their sweet hearts of service and desire to help their community.
