Share Your Thoughts on the Upcoming Session

Short session is right around the corner...

Next month, the 2024 Legislative Session will convene. I anticipate several major issues on the horizon for the short session and wanted to express my thoughts:

Law Enforcement – Many District 57 constituents have reached out to our office expressing their frustration with a lack of law enforcement in the State of Oregon. To combat this, the State must provide more resources to the Oregon State Police (OSP). I have drafted a bill that will allow more Oregon State Police employees to take advantage of benefit packages, which will help with both recruitment and retention. Additionally, I will be advocating for more funding for OSP Troopers specifically within District 57.

Public Safety – Measure 110 has created a public safety and health crisis. Drug use has proliferated, resulting in a rise in overdoses. There has been an outcry from health professionals and law enforcement officers regarding the devastating effects. It appears the Legislature will attempt to make fixes to Measure 110 in the 2024 session. I firmly believe there must be changes made and will advocate for both reasonable and compassionate solutions.

Housing – Studies have shown that rural Oregon needs more housing at all levels of income. Increasing housing in the State has become one of Governor Kotek’s cornerstone priorities. While we often disagree, I stand ready to partner with the Governor to support both policies and funding that will increase rural housing. My specific focus will be on District 57’s most pressing housing need: middle income housing.
